Concepts of inbound links, outbound links, internal links, dangling links
Inbound links are links from other web sites to your site. Inbound links are one way to increase your site's total PageRank. You have no control over other sites linking into your site, and so your site is not penalized because of where the links come from.
Outbound links are links from your web site to other sites. they leak PageRank. you have to try to ensure that the links are reciprocated. Be careful, reciprocal links can gain or lose PageRank. So you can use TOP100Rank software to search PageRank of reciprocal links, avoid leaking your site's PageRank.
Internal links are links within your site. A website has a maximum amount of PageRank that is distributed between its pages by internal links.
Dangling links are links that point to any page with no outgoing links. Although dangling links do no harm to your site, but it is pointless wasting PageRank unnecessarily.
Tips
1) The maximum amount of PageRank in a site increases as the number of pages in the site increases, be careful not to add pages that are all identical or very nearly identical and are known as cookie-cutters. Otherwise, your site will be penalized.
2) The only way to increase the maximum is to add more inbound links
